Abstract

This paper presents a reading of two poems by Ruy Belo, respectively “Sacral-profane Portugal: the place where” and “The future portugal”, both belonging to the book Homem de Palavra[s] (1969) and to the anthology País Possível (1973). We seek to perceive two sides of Portugal present in Ruy Belo's work: the darkness, characterized by the consequences of Salazarism and by history facts; and the light, the dream, in which happiness will be found and a future renewed, away from tragedies that afflict the poet so much. We will analyze, in the end, the edification of a country through dreams of poetry, “where the pure bird is possible”.
